Ben Witherington III exegetes Romans in this volume of his series of socio-rhetorical commentaries and offers fresh insights and a new translation of the Greek text of Romans. Demonstrating how post-Reformation interpretations have been too reliant upon Augustinian readings, he suggests studying the epistle in light of early Jewish theology, Rome's historical situation, and Paul's own rhetorical concerns. Each section of the commentary ends with a brief discussion titled 'Bridging the Horizons,' which suggests how the ancient text of Romans may speak to us today.
Ben Witherington III is professor of New Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky.
